What is Vermiculite?

Vermiculite is a low density insulation that is non-asbestos but in some cases it was contaminated with asbestos (material sold by W.R. Grace with the name Zonolite Attic Insulation (ZAI)). It was used to insulate attics, walls or around chimney liners. The vermiculite insulation sold in Canada came from asbestos free-deposits, so sampling must be made to determine if the product is asbestos or non-asbestos. Upon the sale of a property or disturbance of vermiculite we recommend sampling of the material. If you are the owner of a home with ZAI, you may need to remove the insulation before you can sell your home. The cost of removal depends on the size of your attic.
